It was a historic and fantastic day when Swansea City beat Reading 4-2 to win promotion to the Premier League. Everyone’s feeling pretty elated about it, but the next question for us at Swansea Bay Futures is, how do we maximise the benefits for the city?
The Premier League is watched by a huge global television audience. As Carwyn Jones has said: “This fantastic achievement will play an important role in further raising the profile of Swansea and Wales in the UK and further afield.”

Swansea council said promotion would give “the entire city a massive lift” and put it on an international stage every week. Promotion to the Premier League has been described as a ‘true footballing fairy story’. Chris Holley, leader of the council said, the Swans’ success would be worth millions of pounds to the city in tourism and trade.
He said: “The Swans’ success is the city’s success as well. It will help create and protect jobs in the local economy, particularly in tourism.
“The Premier League attracts worldwide audiences which will help raise Swansea’s profile on the international stage and attract interest from sports fans and potential visitors from all over the world.
“And it means every other week thousands of fans from places like Manchester, Liverpool, Newcastle and London will be visiting Swansea and spending their money in local restaurants, pubs and hotels. We’re sure they’ll like what they see and come back again with friends and family to enjoy the marvellous scenery and hospitality Swansea has to offer.”
So, what can we do to ensure this happens, and leverage all this attention for the good of the city? Discuss!

A Welsh Brewery has found a way to profit from the success…
Brewery Tomos Watkin has produced a new beer to celebrate Swansea City’s rise to football’s top division. Premier Ale will be sold in its South-West Wales pubs with the tag: “Not so ugly now”. Phil Parry, who runs the family brewery with his sister Connie, said: “We decided we had to make a new brew to mark the great achievement by the Swans.
“We are respectfully not selling it in Cardiff, not wanting to upset our customers there. But I’m sure it will go down a storm in Swansea where people will be happy to toast the Swans’ success with a special beer to mark the achievement. I wouldn’t be surprised if visiting fans from places like Newcastle, Manchester and Liverpool will give it a try, too.”

Join us at the next event to discuss ideas!
Everyone is saying that the Swans’ promotion to the Premier League will mean great things for Swansea and the region. There’s no doubt that it will bring exposure on the sports pages of the UK’s national newspapers, and TV exposure too – not just in Britain but around the world. And thousands of football fans who’ve never been here will soon be following their team by hopping on a coach marked: “Swansea.”
But what can we do to ensure this exposure makes a difference?
We’re interested in discussing this question with local and regional businesses, to come up with strategies that we can collectively implement. We know we can’t just sit by and wait for someone else to ‘make it happen’. So what can we do, as business people in the area, to capitalise on this opportunity ourselves, for the benefit of everyone?
