How do other cities capitalise on their Waterfront Locations?

This discussion started on LinkedIn.  The group agrees that Swansea Bay needs to capitalise more on being by the coast, with the beach so close to the city and the stunning coastlines of Gower and Carmarthenshire within such easy reach.  A surprising number of British people surveyed don’t even know that Swansea is by the sea!!

How can we maximise the benefit of our coastal location to attract visitors and promote the region?  Add your comments below!

  ŵyl y môr Festival of the Sea

  Could we build on existing events to create a signature event for Swansea?

  Have done a quick bit of research. Whilst the idea of a Festival of the Sea clearly isn’t unique – see the links below, I’m sure we’ve got enough special things going for us in Swansea to make something with major ‘crowd’ appeal.

  BAE FEST 2010

  We did what we could to support Bae Fest in its final week of preparation – Helen Bowden from the Wave and Swansea Sound gave it quite a bit of promotion on the day and is interested in becoming a media sponsor next year. Evening Post sent a photographer down.

  The event itself seemed a big success – did you make it? Turnout was great, lots of families and good mix of people, weather was OK and Jay was pleased with how it went. She wasn’t certain before, but following the success of the day she is now intending to run it again next year… but needs support and also needs to raise the funds from somewhere. So hopefully she will come along to the SBF Network meeting on Wed 22nd and see how all this fits in with the “festival of the sea” idea! I certainly think there’s an opportunity to build on Bae Fest with the group, if this fits in with where the organisers want to take the event.

  Swansea Bay has some of the best scenic coastline in Wales, as well as history and culture associated with people who live and have lived along the Swansea Bay over the years. What we need is some form of event to highlight the attractions and falities in a sustainable way. Pembrokeshire has fish week, so how can we build on a similiar type of project. Gower Walking Festival highlights the potential of walking. What about potential for cycling, or hop on hop off bus tours?
